about

SayaBlood+ is an anime/manga/novel/game franchise produced by Production I.G. The anime is complete at fifty episodes, with two finished novel serials and a five-volume manga adaptation rounding out the universe. The story's focus is on Otonashi Saya, a teenager living with an adoptive family in Okinawa. Saya loves her family (George, Kai, Riku) but suffers from memory loss and can't recall anything before one year previous. When monstrous creatures (dubbed "chiropterans") begin appearing in Okinawa, Saya must accept her destiny as humanity's secret weapon and fight to defend those she loves.

David

DavidDavid is an ex-military officer turned special agent for the independent Red Shield organisation. As with all members of Red Shield, David is devoted to ridding the world of horrible bat monsters. He takes his appointed duty (to watch over Saya) very seriously and makes it clear from the get-go that he is willing to risk everything to achieve Red Shield's goals.

DavidDavid carries a "burden of fate" (as Lewis puts it) and past losses weigh heavily on his mind. His father (the previous "David") died quite horrifically during the failed revival of Saya in 1972. This tragedy left the young David with some fairly sizable daddy-issues and a deep desire to right the wrongs of the past. In the early 90's David served as an officer during the Gulf War under the tutorage of Gray until his unit was wiped out by an unexpected chiropteran attack. The only survivor of this massacre, David was left with a collection of disfiguring scars across his body and STILL MORE EMOTIONAL ISSUES. Subsequent to his recovery, David discarded his true name and took up his father's role at Red Shield (*~issues~* intact).

DavidPossessing of an incredibly cold and abrasive manner, David begins the series as something of an emotional cripple (to quote Julia, "a robot"). He has little patience with the teenagers who inadvertently wind up in his care and is excessively driven to achieve Red Shield's objectives. As time progresses, he begins to show his sensitive side a little more, though he personally feels this is a weakness - "I'm no longer as strong as I was".

Over the course of the series, David manages to be as manly as all fuck (jumping out of an exploding helicopter, anyone?) while still trying to sort out all the baggage he carries across the globe (he just wants to be nooormal). Between the shota opera and the Hawaiian shirts, he gets there in the end.
